CLASIFYING FOODBORNE ILLNESSES

FOODBORNE INFECTIONS

Result when a person eats food containing pathogens, wich then grow in the intestines and cause illness.
Tipically, symptoms of a foodborne illness do not appear inmediately

FOODBORNE INTOXICATIONS

Result when a person eats food containning toxinsthat cause ilness. The toxin may have been produced by pathogens found in the food or may be the result of a chemical contamination.
The toxin might aso be a natural part of a plant or animal consumed.
Tipically symptoms of a foodvorne intoxications appear quickly, within a few hours.

FOODBORNE TOXIN-MEDIATED INFECTIONS

Result when a person eats food containing pathogens, which then produce illness-causing toxins in the intestines
